Karen Swisher, PT, DPT
The
thrill of competition and fitness are close to Dr. Swisher’s
heart. She has been at the top level of competition as an All-State
athlete in softball. Having been involved in a variety of sports
including soccer, basketball, volleyball, snowboarding, surfing,
bicycling and even boxing, she recognizes the commitment it takes
to achieve excellence. She has participated in co-ed soccer in
Southern California, finishing the league on top in championship
style. Injuries have been minimal but suffering from a severe ankle
sprain created a temporary halt to her active lifestyle. Dr. Swisher
went on to effectively train and complete the San Diego Rock and
Roll Marathon that same year!
Academically, in 2006, Karen earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy
through Boston University’s Sargent College of Rehabilitative
Sciences. In 1998, she completed her Master’s of Physical
Therapy at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. She
has practiced physical therapy in Southern California for over
eight years in orthopedic settings, as well as acute hospital
and home health care. She understands the spectrum of rehab and
is dedicated to the active individual living a life free of pain
and limitation.
Dr. Swisher loves to continue to learn and bring her patients
up to date with evidence based-research, helping them to better
understand their pathology. This successfully equips them with
the tools to overcome it. She is the Continuing Education Chairperson
for the Tri-County District of the American Physical Therapy
Association. Her manual skills have been enhanced with a yearlong
manual therapy course focusing on Maitland-based clinical reasoning.
Dr. Swisher has continued to update her knowledge and skills
with the following courses: clinical reasoning, differentiation
and management of cervical disorders; clinical reasoning of recalcitrant
shoulder problems; update in the foot/ankle; lumbopelvic influences
on anterior knee pain; diagnosis, examination and treatment of
the dizzy and imbalanced patient, golf rehabilitation, and more!
She loves seeing people living fruitful, active lives!
