Consulting
Stephen has been a longtime member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA),
an organization that provides certification as well as a great deal of services
for the profession (www.APTA.org). The APTA has established a service for its
members called the Consulting Services Network (CSN). Stephen has been selected
and will serve as one of the original members on the CSN. This fee-for-service
program is intended to provide the country's physical therapist with a business consultant
and experienced advisor. Stephen's ability to objectively assess a practice's position or
to clarify the owner's goal and exit strategies, have helped a number of therapists already.
For the judicial system, physical therapy is coming to play an increasingly prominent role.
Stephen is among the elite class of physical therapists who also serve as expert witnesses.
In this role he has done both depositions and given expert testimony. In the latter capacity,
Stephen has been an unbiased witness, reviewing charts and records to provide expert testimony
based on his review of the patient history and treatment. In other instances,
he has also testified as the treating physical therapist. Recently he was involved in
a high profile case involving a San Diego Chargers player who had been injured. References
are available for this aspect of Stephen's career.
Physical therapy is a new American export and Stephen is poised to be among the
first to take his expertise into the largest untapped foreign market. Recently, Stephen
returned from China where he has held meetings in Beijing on behalf of an Asian
investment group intent on bringing the high level of American physical therapy to the
huge clientele of professional athletes and citizens in China. Conservatively numbered at
26,000 elite athletes, the country is very interested in importing this American practice and
the investment group has selected Stephen as their primary representative of the
profession. During his tour, Stephen met and discussed ideas with members of
the Chinese National Sports Bureau, the Central Health Department and the Beijing
Government Olympic Committee. He also visited the sites for potential facilities
including Beijing Hospital and provided his input on their design.
This is the summary of some of the recent progress Stephen has made for both his
business, AthelticPT, and the field of physical therapy as a whole. There are many more
exciting things to come.
